Getting Started

The question most newbie poker players ask is how to get started playing poker online?

Getting started is not as complicated as it might seem. We’ve compiled all the information you will need, from downloading software to funding a ‘real money’ player account, to enable you to play online poker.

Downloading Software

When you have decided on the poker room you would like to play at, visit their website, and you will find plenty of “Download” icons. Click one of them, and download the program. This program will allow you to join in on the poker games.

Opening an Account

When the program is installed on your computer, you will need to register your new poker account. For this you’ll need to provide an email address and a nickname (or handle) to activate your account. Once your account is setup you are able to play poker.

Online poker rooms, allow you to play for free, at the “Fun Money” or “Practice Play” tables. We recommend that you play for a while at the free tables, as this will help familiarise you with the buttons to act, and general features of the poker room. All poker rooms will have different features, like multi-coloured decks to help you distinguish the suits; or options to make notes on your opponents tendencies for future games. Look around your chosen poker rooms to see what features they have to offer!

Funding your Account

When you feel ready to play at the ‘Real Money’ tables, you’ll need to deposit money into your poker account. All poker rooms offer a variety of safe options for depositing money into your account.

However, credit cards may not be an option, as although most poker rooms will accept these, the credit card companies will deny transactions at an online poker room. It is for this reason that we recommend you open an alternative payment method, and as an added bonus, most poker rooms will reward you for doing so.

The method of payment that most online poker players use is NETeller, this is an online payment transfer service. To set this up, you register a bank account, fund your new NETeller account from your bank account, and then use this new account to deposit at the poker room.

Now all you have to do is find a table you would like to play at and start playing!

Note: It is your responsibility to check if playing poker online is okay with your local government!
